The UAE Golden Visa: Who Qualifies, and What a PRO Firm Actually Does

Ten-year and five-year long-term residency — the routes that exist, the ones clients ask about but do not qualify for, and where the processing work really sits.

What the Golden Visa actually is

The Golden Visa is long-term residency issued for five or ten years, renewable, and — this is the part that changes how it feels to hold one — self-sponsored. There is no employer standing behind it. The holder sponsors themselves, sponsors their spouse and children, and can sponsor support staff. They can stay outside the UAE for more than six months without the residency lapsing, which ordinary residence visas do not permit.

For a PRO firm, that last point is the one clients misunderstand most often. A standard residence visa dies quietly if its holder is away too long. A Golden Visa does not, and that difference alone is why senior staff ask about it.

The ten-year routes

Ten-year residency runs to investors, entrepreneurs, specialised talent, outstanding students and graduates, and the category created for frontline pandemic workers.

Investors reach it through a public investment of AED 2 million or more, or through property of at least AED 2 million. The property route is the one that produces most enquiries and most disappointment: clients hear "two million" and assume any two million, when the authority looks at the specific title deed, whether the property is mortgaged, and with which bank.

Specialised talent covers doctors, scientists, inventors, creatives, executives and athletes, and it runs on nomination and accreditation rather than on a number. A client who asks whether they qualify as "talent" is really asking whether a UAE authority will accredit their field, and that is a research question before it is a processing one.

The five-year routes

Five-year residency covers property investors at the same AED 2 million threshold, entrepreneurs with an approved project, and outstanding students with the grades and institution to support it. The five-year and ten-year property routes overlap enough that the practical question is usually not "which visa" but "which authority, and what have they asked for this month".

Where the work is

The application itself is not the labour. The labour is in three places.

Qualifying the client before you start. Most Golden Visa enquiries do not qualify, and the cost of finding that out three weeks in is a client who feels misled. A short, honest first conversation about which route they are actually on saves more than it costs.

Assembling evidence that survives review. Nomination routes want accreditation, portfolios, salary certificates, and attestations. Investment routes want title deeds, valuations, and bank letters in the right names. The failure mode is almost never a missing document; it is a document in the wrong name or past its validity.

Dependants. A Golden Visa holder is a sponsor, and sponsors generate work. Spouse, children, sometimes parents, sometimes domestic staff — each with an Emirates ID, a medical, and a renewal date that will land long after the file feels closed.

What people forget after it is issued

A Golden Visa is not a settled status and it is not permanent. It expires. The Emirates ID attached to it expires on its own cycle. Dependants' visas expire on theirs. Because the headline says "ten years", these dates fall out of everyone's attention in a way that a two-year visa's never does — and a lapsed Golden Visa is considerably more painful to unwind than a lapsed employment one.

That is the argument for holding it in the same system as everything else rather than in the client's memory. The visa type is unusual; the renewal discipline is not.

A note on accuracy

Thresholds, eligible categories and required evidence are set by ICP and the emirate-level authorities, and they are revised. Treat the figures above as the shape of the scheme rather than as this week's rulebook, and confirm the current position before advising a client to spend money on the strength of it.

Long-term residency, tracked like everything else

A Golden Visa still expires, and its holder still has an Emirates ID and dependants with their own dates. Proziyo keeps all of it on one record.
