UAE Visa Processing Times: How Long Every Stage Actually Takes

Entry permit, medical, Emirates ID, stamping - realistic durations for each stage under normal and express processing, and the three things that cost you weeks regardless of what you pay.

How long it actually takes, stage by stage

"How long does a UAE visa take?" has no single answer, because a residence visa is not one process - it is five or six sequential ones, each with its own queue, its own express option, and its own way of failing. The honest answer for a straightforward employment case is two to four weeks end to end, and the variance inside that range is almost entirely down to which steps you paid to accelerate and whether the documents were right the first time.

Below is each stage with realistic durations under normal and express processing. Treat these as planning figures rather than guarantees: authority throughput varies with season, and the published service levels move.

2-4 weeksTypical end-to-end, employment entry permit to stamped residence visa
5-7 daysAchievable with express handling at every stage, documents clean
60 daysEntry permit validity - miss this window and the permit is reissued at full cost

Stage 1 - Entry permit

The entry permit (often called the employment visa or e-visa) is the authorisation to enter the country for the purpose of taking up employment. It is filed by the employer against an active establishment card.

  • Normal processing: allow around three to five working days.
  • Express: often same or next working day at additional cost.
  • What delays it: passport validity under six months, non-compliant photograph, a job title inconsistent with the licence activity, or an inactive establishment card.

Once issued the permit is typically valid for 60 days. That window is the most commonly wasted asset in the whole process: a candidate serving a three-month notice period who receives their permit early will watch it expire, and the employer pays again.

File the permit against the start date, not the offer date

The permit clock starts at issue, not at arrival. If the candidate cannot travel or change status within the validity window, the sensible move is to delay filing rather than to file early and hope. Work backwards from the confirmed start date.

Stage 2 - Entry or status change

If the employee is outside the UAE, they simply travel on the permit. If they are already in the country on a visit or tourist visa, they undergo a status change in-country instead.

  • Entry from abroad: governed by the employee's travel, not by any authority queue.
  • In-country status change: typically a couple of working days, with an additional government fee.

Stage 3 - Medical fitness test

A blood test and chest X-ray at an approved medical centre, screening for the conditions specified in federal regulations.

  • Normal results: roughly two to four working days.
  • Express / VIP: same or next day at most centres.
  • What delays it: centre capacity at peak times, and results requiring follow-up.

Stage 4 - Emirates ID biometrics

Fingerprints and photograph captured at an ICP-approved centre. The appointment itself is short; the card is produced and delivered afterwards.

  • Biometric capture: usually within a few days of booking, often same-week.
  • Card production and delivery: commonly one to two weeks, and it runs in parallel with the rest of the file rather than blocking it.

Stage 5 - Contract registration and residence stamping

The employment contract is registered, then the residence visa is issued against the passport file.

  • Normal processing: allow three to five working days.
  • Express: often same or next working day.
  • What delays it: any mismatch between the registered contract and the terms filed at entry-permit stage. A salary or title that changed in between will bounce the file at the last step, which is the most expensive place to fail.

Cost it before you commit

Free zone versus mainland: does it change the timeline?

Less than people expect. The federal steps - medical, biometrics, stamping - are the same either way. What differs is who files and through which portal.

Free zones such as JAFZA and Dubai World Central operate delegated immigration services, so the employer deals with one authority end to end. Mainland files split across MOHRE for the labour side and GDRFA or ICP for immigration - two systems, two reference numbers, and one more place for a file to stall. In practice free zone processing is often marginally faster for a clean file, and meaningfully faster when something needs chasing, because there is one desk to chase.

The authority map is worth internalising if you work across both: we set it out in MOHRE, ICA, GDRFA and DED explained.

The three things that actually cost you weeks

Express processing shaves days. These three cost weeks, and no fee accelerates them.

  1. Certificate attestation. Professional job categories may require an attested degree, certified in the issuing country and again by UAE authorities. That chain runs in weeks and sometimes months. Start it the day the offer is accepted - it is the only item in the process with a genuinely open-ended tail.
  2. Passport validity. Under six months and the file stops, at entry-permit stage or at stamping. Renewing a passport through a foreign consulate is not a process you control. Screen every candidate's passport before filing anything.
  3. Establishment card lapses. An expired company immigration card freezes all visa activity - new hires, renewals and cancellations alike. It is entirely preventable and it is the one that most often turns a routine hire into an escalation.

Planning a realistic start date

For a clean employment case with no attestation requirement, four weeks from filing to a stamped visa is a safe commitment and two to three is a realistic target with express handling. Where attestation is involved, the honest planning figure is six to eight weeks, and the variable is the issuing country rather than anything in the UAE.

To price a case before committing, our free UAE visa cost calculator breaks fees down by visa type, emirate and nationality with a timeline estimate. Once people are hired, the problem inverts from processing to tracking - the expiry checker shows where a whole roster stands today, free and without signup.

And if the answer is that nobody should be manually watching ninety dates across three entities, a 30-day Proziyo trial takes about an hour to load, after which the right person gets told at 90, 60, 30 and 14 days out - every time, including the month the PRO officer is on leave.
